Crime Rate Decrease -
Irving’s
crime rate has fallen 9
percent in the first six months of
the year, continuing a five-year downward trend. Moreover,
violent crimes, aggravated
assaults, robberies, burglaries and vehicle thefts in Irving have all
experienced double-digit percent decreases within the first six months of the
year.

New Library E-Newsletters -
The
Irving Public Library has
launched two new electronic communication tools to help book lovers locate new
and interesting reading material. Links inside the newsletters also allow
subscribers to place books on hold online.

is a free monthly e-newsletter that highlights up to 12 book titles in more
than 20 categories including best-selling, nonfiction and romance. Subscribers
have the option of receiving alerts via e-mail and/or RSS feeds. Readers may

providers are doing to help motivate, or prevent, grid-free living. Register

Library Fundraiser
- The
Irving Public Library and
Barnes & Noble Booksellers will hold a book voucher fundraiser from Aug.
6-8 at the
Irving Mall, 3634 Irving Mall, and North Irving, 7615 N. MacArthur Blvd,
locations. A percentage of
Barnes & Noble purchases will benefit Irving’s Big Read whenever a
voucher is used. Vouchers will be available at all libraries or they can be
printed from
www.cityofirving.org/library.

and dumpster enclosure design guidelines from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 3 in the

a compilation of input received from Irving business owners at meetings hosted

Supplies for Success –
Irving residents and
businesses are invited to participate in the
6th Annual Mayor and Firefighters’ Supplies for Success school supply
drive July 5-Aug. 6. This citywide event is held to collect school supplies for
economically disadvantaged students who attend school in
Irving ISD.
Donations may be dropped off at
any Irving fire station. Financial contributions for the purchase of
supplies can be mailed to: IISD Partnerships in Education c/o Supplies for
Success Drive, P.O. Box 152637,

City of Irving and
Irving Mall Host Back To School Fiesta Event for Irving-Area Children
– To make important immunizations available and to increase children's
excitement about the start of a new school year, the
City of Irving and Irving
Mall will host the Back To School Fiesta on Thursday, Aug. 12 from 3-7 p.m. on
the lower level near the food court. Additional supporters of the event include
Amerigroup Community Care, CareVan, Irving ISD, North Lake College, and
Dallas County Health &
Human Services. The first 500 VFC-eligible children attending the event will
receive complimentary immunizations. In addition, school-age children receiving
shots at this event will receive
free school supplies. Families will also enjoy vendor booths and
activities throughout the evening. The line for verification of need and
eligibility will form at 2 p.m., no earlier. Please note that in order to
receive free immunizations, participants must be VFC-eligible, a parent or
guardian must accompany the child and the parent must bring the child's shot

Dog
Adoption Promotion - Adopt
a dog weighing 40 pounds or more and get a free dog bed while supplies last at
the Irving Animal Care Campus, 4140 Valley View Lane. Go to http://tiny.cc/qrtua to
see animals now available for adoption. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday
through Saturday.
Interactive
News Website – Through
a collaborative effort between Corporate Communications and Information
Technology, the city has launched an interactive news website. Features include
prominent video players, news tickers, and streamlined content to mirror the
city’s mission to residents, visitors and businesses. Viewers also have the
option to send news articles through e-mail. The website is at www.cityofirving.org.
Screening
Wall – Construction
of a screening wall along the O’Connor corridor, spanning 1,100 feet from
Brockbank to Goodyear streets, began July 6. The 7-foot stone masonry
compression wall is similar in size and style to the wall installed at the
intersection of MacArthur Boulevard and Sixth Street. Construction is expected
to be completed by mid-August.
Gilbert
Road Railroad Crossing Completion – The
Gilbert Road railroad crossing has been reconstructed for two tracks. The
road opened for traffic on July 9.

Opportunity - Team HOPE
Team
HOPE—Helping Others Prosper Everyday—continues its drive to collect canned
goods and non-perishable items for the Irving Cares pantry through July 31.
Drop off your donations in decorated collection boxes located on each floor at
City Hall, 825 W. Irving Blvd.; the Central Library, 801 W. Irving Blvd.; the
Criminal Justice Center, 305 N. O’Connor Road; or the Valley View Municipal
